5: Good headway in thunderstorm.

Jiangjingguan - Longmencun - Huangyaguan

Morning was bright and sunny and made excellent start from Jiangjingguan for about 9km before a thunderstorm raged.

We quickly got off the wall and huddles under the poplar trees, avoiding a possible lightning strike and the pouring rain. Waited half an hour and after an apple break, continued to trek.

It became obvious that the wall was getting slippery and dangerous, we decided to exit the wall at Longmencun at around mid-day, called for CH and headed to Huangyaguan restored wall.

The place was still covered in dense mist, had my noodles, paid the entrance fee and went up the Huangyaguan wall, past the 523 heavenly steps to the tallest tower. Another thunderstorm came, waited and came back down for the day. Met an 11-year old girl with her brothers and they kept saying Yeah, yeah to me – so I responded with “yeah babies”? After repeated “yeh-yeh”, I became fully aware of how old I must have appeared (didn’t shave for the last 4 days). I was soaked through and incredibly CH drove the mountain paths in the dark back to Jiangjingguan for the night..​
