Dear All,

C.O.U.N.T (Compassion, Optimism, Unity, Nature, Tomorrow) 1,000,000 steps :-

"Every fortunate person to demonstrate the Compassion of one's heart and donate to the destitute and needy, so that together we can share and partake in the Optimism and hope for the Unity of all peoples to preserve the wonders and beauty of Nature for our children of Tomorrow."

As I start my preparation for my next million steps, is there anyone out there foolish or crazy enough to join me please?

For a peek of my last walk, go to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IPIIEALtq4

and this year's most challenging "wild" wall section: Jiankou:

Well folks,

It's time to go, after so many festivities (Merdeka, Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, Hungary Ghost, Malaysia Day, Moon Cake festival, Lantern festival, etc.), to continue the Ming Great Wall hike, the least prepared physically this time round.

Only managed 311,379 steps (cf. to >1M in previous years), little weight training; I shall be carrying a weight of 64kg and a waist band of 82.5cm (32.5"), I hope to strengthen the legs in the 1st week before tackling the "wild" wall of Jiankou and beyond.

This year's hike shall start at my last stop, Zhangjiakou thru to Jiankou, Mutianyu, Gubeikou, Jinshaling, Simatai and end at Huangyaguan, a total existing wall of about 557km. (see map - under photos section); for those who might be interested to look at more details, go view it here:-

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.greatwallforum.com/Hin2012.kmz (link removed, refer below:)
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?hl=en_US&mid=1Az9EK80h5_ut29jD3EeixdI5g6s

We aim to hike the outer perimeter of the Ming Great Wall and as such, shall be skirting the 2nd or 3rd line of defence, the city and town walls, such as the ever popular Badaling - one you would want to avoid during the National holidays (see picture - under photos section):

The starting point, the Zhangjiakou Great Wall, is considered as the "Great Wall Museum of All Dynasties" because all the Great Wall constructional styles, built by 8 dynasties, can be found here. Many fierce great battles were fought here and it's here that the great Genghis Khan breached the wall and captured Beijing.

The target end point, is the scenic and restive Huangya wall. This is where Mao Zedong proclaim his famous diktat: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man; He who does not love the Great Wall is not a hero"; which over time has been toned to "He who has not been to the Great Wall, has not experience greatness". And interestingly, to reach this part of the wall, one has to scale the "Tianti" (Heavenly Ladder), how appropriate, if I can reach this point, I shall be in heaven. No worry, I shall be back, heaven is for saints only and I'm not - not yet, anyway.

This year I have the privilege to walk the whole trek, with my good friend AL Oldenburg (premium German stallion), perhaps a week with a Japanese Samurai and a Chinese Dragon. The 2 Singapore Singas (Lion) decided to take a break this year and promised to roar back next. Well, when they do, they will be most welcomed back by this Malaysian Harimau (Tiger).

Take care and all the best.

Wish you and loved ones enough.

Rgds,
Hin

Dear Junji,

Would you like to join me in this year's Ming Great Wall hike from Zhangjiakou? You need not have to do the entire length, just determine how many days you can spare and we'll work out the stretch most suitable.

Let me know.

Rgds,
Hin

Junji Kawabe <xxxxxxxxx@xxxxx.com>   Mon, Aug 6, 2012 at 8:15 AM

Okay, Uncle Hin.
I am in.
Preferably, I would like to start from Zhangjiakou since I have read it is one of the most interesting point, is it true?
Jiankou wild sounds interesting also. How many days will I need to walk through this section if start from Zhangjiakou?

Let me check my schedule at the end of September again.
People usually start to leave a few days before National holiday, so I am expecting work to be on the slow side.
Thank you for your invitation.

My best regards,
Junji Kawabe
