Hin's 4th C.O.U.N.T. 1,000,000 steps (Sep 22nd – Oct 16th, 2012)

9. And you thought it was all over?

Thean Hin Ooi <ooithin@gmail.com>   Thu, Oct 25, 2012 at 11:38 PM

Dear All,

Needed to rest the old bones after this year's trek.

I was overly optimistic over the target distance given the last 3 years successful completions. Not well prepared physically and from day 1, the tough terrain quickly made it known to me. It took almost 4 days to get into my stride and even then, didn't anticipate the gruelling challenge on this mountainous trek. It was so tough that at times, I had to proceed on all four.

Final count this year, is only 421.3km, 781.296 steps with a total ascend of 27,103m, way short of the planned 550km and 1,000,000 steps.

Had another evaluation of the final destination at Shanhaiguan, and per GoogleEarth, the distance to go, as the crow flies, is about 300km. But the cat walk following the twists and turns of the wall through the mountain terrain is estimated to be about another 800km. This means that I would need another 2 years to complete this journey. Gosh, I would be 60 (my 5th Chinese Zodiac cycle) before I'm done.

To date, in the last 4 years, I have covered the following:-
1. Y2009 - 20 days hike: 593.2km, 1,137,882 steps;
2. Y2010 - 24 days hike: 557.4km, 1,038,591 steps,
3. Y2011 - 22 days hike: 553.2km, 1,005,782 steps,
4. Y2012 - 23 days hike: 421.3km, 781,296 steps.
totalling 2,125.1km, 3,963,651 steps.

It's quite obvious that the average distance covered year on year is getting less - most probably due to my advancing years and likely the more and more difficult terrain.

I'm told next year is going to be even tougher and there are some sections where one could only make 3km/day! Well, I really have to me super ready for the next 2 years challenge. Anyone intending to join in, do start preparing soonest.

I have attached some photo collages of this year's trip and hope you will enjoy them.

Last but not least, just a quick reminder - have you donated to your favourite charity yet?

C.O.U.N.T (Compassion, Optimism, Unity, Nature, Tomorrow) 1,000,000 steps :-

"Every fortunate person to demonstrate the Compassion of one's heart and donate to the destitute and needy, so that together we can share and partake in the Optimism and hope for the Unity of all peoples to preserve the wonders and beauty of Nature for our children of Tomorrow."

Wish you enough.

Take care and all the very best.

Rgds,
Hin

Hi Hin,

Thanks for sharing your interesting but dangerous journey in China but am glad that you manage to come back in one piece despite your injuries.  How did Amy and your children react to your life threatening experience?  Still dare to go again?  "Buay kia sie""!

It's time to bring your family to Singapore and enjoy Sentosa with all it's attractions and the beautiful Gardens by the Bay.

We - Richard, Ros, Edwin and myself - went to Taipei and Hong Kong late April to early May for a holiday.  Met up with Christine Chung and her family and they treated us to dinner.  Whenever we visit HK, she is always happy to play host and would accompany us around. She asked that you call her when you are next there.

Bel will be bringing Ashleigh (7 yrs old) and Jonathan (3 yrs) to Melbourne in Dec, one week ahead of Ben (he's busy with housing projects) and will spend 3 weeks with her in-law and be back in time for the kids' schooling.  Juliet will also go back to Philippines when they are away to spend Christmas with her family.  She is a great and cheerful helper, and the kids love her alot.

Property prices have risen tremendously despite the cooling measures by the govt.  Ros and Edwin bought The Hillier (Hillview area) which will be ready only in 2015 , same time as the downtown MRT line.

Do you want to buy a Bungalow which I am marketing jointly with a co-agent in Frankel estate (Katong area) for $23.5M? Not easy to find a client with this kind of money, though we   did have an offer for $19M but sellers are not accepting.

Richard is still working for MTQ but don't know for how long, as he's currently on contract basis.  He's hoping to find his millions so that he can retire like you, and then join you in mountain climbing.

Warmest regards to all of you,

Irene & family

Thank you very much sister Irene.

Good to hear that you and family are having a wonderful time.

Yes, am glad to be back.

As for my Great Fall, Amy thought I was putting on a show.......well, a cat has 9 lives.

Now visiting Singapore is a thought. Any recommended place to stay? We shall bring along our sleeping bags?

Take care.

Hin

Hi Hin,

Yes, you can climb Bukit Timah Hill and camp there.
I am sure you will enjoy it and the monkeys there will enjoy your company.

Let me know when you are coming and we can catch up.

I am arranging to meet Jacy and Denise for lunch next week.
Also waiting to meet Adeline Ang, and Veron, if she's up to it.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks so very much Bro Hin for keeping me in your loop!  I love your sense of adventure and your humour.

Enjoyed every step of your adventure and felt for the harimau.  Tickled pink to know that harimaus don't meow!

I hope one of these days, you will give a talk on the Great Wall and your adventures, sharing your wonderful slides and adventure.

This once half baked amateur kit kat backpacker cannot dream of walking like the harimau but we are wonderful armchair travellers.

Looking forward to your next adventure,

Best Regards

Hello Hin,

Thanks for all the emails and photos !  Sorry you came up short in your totals;
I was rooting for you.  However, when I saw some of the rocks and terrain in
your photos, I think you actually did pretty well to get as far as you did...

Good luck on your great adventure next year !

Keep in touch.

Cheers, Bob

Hin,

I'd be tempted, but I don't think I'm up to it.  And I won't have had four years
of experience on the easier portions to get ready !  (Plus I reserve most of my
vacation time for trips to the UK to see my family.)

Thanks for the offer, though.

Cheers, Bob

Hi! Thean Hin - how do we donate towards this C.O.U.N.T. that u mentioned?

Thean Hin Ooi <ooithin@gmail.com>   Tue, Oct 30, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Hi KK,

I have not designated nor nominated any charity of my choice for this COUNT, though there were a couple of friends who wanted me to walk for their favourites. As of now, I don't want to seem bias towards any, everyone who thinks my walk can help towards their charitable cause, I'm open for them to use my "mission" as a catalyst for their donation drive. I do not intend to collect nor solicit for money/donation directly.

My intend is to make those fortunate enough to be aware that we should also be thinking of the less fortunate and do whatever we can to help towards alleviating the "suffering"s.

As you have the compassion for the less fortunate, I would request that you help spread the word for all to just donate to a charitable cause of their choice?

Perhaps, you can nominate a worthwhile charity, cause or event for this?

Thanks for your support.

Rgds,
Hin

Tom and i went to Derby for a few days, It is lovely over there, we went to a wedding there when our girls were small but never looked around. Found a lovely chinese restaurant will definetly go again.

We are thinking of hiring a motor home and travelling around this country next summer. So many nice places we haven't seen. Should be fun.

Thanks Bryan,

I have always thought your forum is for more "research" rather than encourage mere physical and psychological adventure, but if you really think this will add value to your forum than I shall do your bidding.
