Hi,

Can't say enough how tough this year's hike is - in fact it's more of a climb.

23/9  06:35 – 16:00.  Lianhuachi - Shentanyu. 14.0 km, 23,344 steps. TA 980m, MA  592m.

The total ascend should tell you how may climb up/dons along this stretch. Attempted to climb over a rock cliff which proved impossible and dangerous. Trekked all the way down to the valley and up again to the wall proper. After which it was quite straight forward following the wall, with no major challenging climbs and reached Shentanyu in good time.

24/9  06:00 - 14:46 – 18:05. Shentanyu – Hefangkou – Qinglongxia. 10.6 km, 17,007 steps. TA 812m MA 592m.

Though the max elevation is not high, there were many climbs and trek across many mountains, bypassing canyons and deep ravines. A few heart stopping slides down smooth rock ridges, as if we are gliding down the back of the dragon - excitingly dangerous. We are quite exhausted when we reached Hefangkou and decided to call it a day. Went over to resort town Qinglongxia for the night and intended to walk back from QLX to HFK the following day.

25/9  06:00 – 14:00 – 17:00.  QLX - HFK – Gubeikou. 9.4 km, 15,141 steps. TA 540 MA 562m.

Excellent morning start and within 2 hours reached the end of the QLX resort's bounded tower. Had to spread open the barbed wire and swung thru the gaping hole, then "repaired" the gap so that it was not noticeable. We then reached the next tower where an even more secured barbed wire and a drop of 5m prevented us from getting directly across. We attempted to circumvent the block by going lower down the mountain but ended up looking over a deep waterfall drop. After 6 hours of bush whacking, decided that there was no way thru and climbed back up into the QLX resort. Had a cold tea drink and took the cable car down We then decided to take on the more interesting Gubeikou stretch and drove to the traditional village of Gubeikou for the night. Beautiful village setting and had a wonderful dinner.

Time for bed. Another tough day ahead.

Good night.

Rgds,

Hin

PS. Jiankou, Up the Tianti and climbing up to Beijingjie.

Reading your account and looking at the pictures made me think of those who had to build the wall and probably suffered tremendously and even given their lives.

Great pictures, great views and great sense of the past, present and future !

Enjoy and take care !

My Friend, be careful in your tracking of this section of the Great Wall. Watch every step of your way and every spot where you put your foot!

We have a date in Dandong!

Have to ask Li Meng to see whether we can change a flight to a day earlier.

The I will have to check whether I can leave a day earlier from Nanjing and change the hotel booking in Beijing to a day earlier, and book an extra night in Dandong. Let me check and revert to you.
