Hin's 4th C.O.U.N.T. 1,000,000 steps (Sep 22nd – Oct 16th, 2012)

2. The Great Fall ....... backwards - Harimau down.

Thean Hin Ooi <ooithin@gmail.com>  Sat, Sep 29, 2012 at 12:16 AM

23-sep 08:15 - 15:15. Dayingpan - Miaogangcun. 9.3km, 14,066 steps. Tot ascent 513m, max elevation 1190m.

Dear all,

Thanks for your concerns......you know we “harimau”s do not meow?

So we can't tame the high mountain, we decided to take on the lesser 2nd line of defence at Dayingpan, built during the 1st Ming Emperor, some 150km away - 2 hours drive from Zjk.

Beautiful white original, still relatively intact wall about 30km long, with parapet only on the outer wall.

We 3 started the hike and were accorded a wonderful view of the wall, limping as I was. We came to a drop-off end of a section, and had to climb down to re-join the other section. AL went first when he found a small foothold and jump down.

I went 2nd, turned my waist-pouch behind, so that now I had both the pouch and my day pack behind. Coming down with foot-hold and grip, AL signalled to jump. I did, landed on the ledge and the weight of the pack and pouch (abt 7kg), pulled me over the wall. Down I went backwards and my 2 companions said their last goodbyes. For about 5 seconds, I felt so serene, no panic, and heard a crunch of a branch. When I opened my eyes, the vision was a blur and knew immediately that I wasn't in a dream. Miracles of miracles, I was "floating" on top of a young tree, my body hardly touch the ground, found my big sunglasses nearby, and cradled inside was my vision glasses, put it on, retrieve my pouch 2m down the slope, did a quick check and came away with only abrasions on the left elbow, left upper calf, right elbow and a bruised left ribs. Called out to my frantic companions that I was alright, and slowly, clinging close to the wall, made my way back.

My companions told me that I had fallen close to 12m and seriously thought the worst. For me, it was as if I had fallen into a lotus flower, how quaint. Omitofo. Om Mani Padme Hom.

The strange thing was whilst at 1000m watching the soaring kite, I was thinking what a feeling it would be to just jump off the edge. Well after the Great Fall, we decided to call it a day, exited at Miaogangcun, and returned to Zjk ... and the harimau is back.

No worry, PW, our date is still on.

Good night and god bless. Thanks for your wishes, prayers and angels sent.

My Friend

You may be a Harimau but remember you are a not-so-young Harimau. My goodness a 12m fall! I have known retirees that really said their last goodbyes when they fell from half that height, at least two of them whom I knew but not close to.

And you must really say thanks to the good Guy up there to have intervened in a divine manner, a script that I thought could only come from movies or Chinese martial arts stories. And it had to be a YOUNG tree. An older tree would have ensured that you had more than just bruises and abrasions - may be a number of broken bones and limbs! Aiya, be careful my friend. make sure you always have firm foot holds for every step that you take!

Yes, you better keep our date. I have already got all my flights confirmed and paid for. Will take MAS from KLIA to Pudong Shanghai, then a train to Nanjing to check on my investment, then a domestic flight to Beijing to meet you. And you know I have booked on the same AirAsia flight back to KL with you.

By the way, ZJK is quite interesting historically. It seems everyone wanted to build a wall there, somewhere near DJM. A check on Baidu (China's equivalent, to say, google or Yahoo) revealed that there are no less than 8 walls there, built by some 10 dynasties, with some built on top of old ones, where some sections may have 5 or 6 walls one on top of the others. Very interestingly, just this last August, on 6-8-2012, a 30 meter section of the wall collapsed because of heavy rain. Can't imagine that it has to collapse now after it had stood there against the harshest elements of weather. See photo below.

Well you must have know most of what I have told you. One last thing, the highest wall of all Great Wall is at this section near ZJK, more than 2000m! You don't have to scale that to prove you are still a strong Harimau!

Good night and rest well and TAKE CARE WITH EVERY STEP of the way on The Wall.

PW

Thank God - please continue to protect Hin as he tracks to discover
your great creation – Man and their work in the Great Wall, their innate nature to reason

And yet to do the exceptional (like my best friend, Hin is doing) and most of all to appreciate the nature around him and us all.

Rest and recover well. You may have to go slowly but surely for this trip.

Dear Hin - glad to hear you are well and your spirit indomitable.

Help me to picture this - what is on the side of the wall you fell into?  How did you get back up the wall if it is 12m?

Take care old man.

Cheers - Keu.

Thean Hin Ooi <ooithin@gmail.com>   Sat, Sep 29, 2012 at 11:22 PM

Deep ravine about a further 20m down, full of bushy thorns. Gingerly clinging to the side of the wall and walked to the lower section. No problem.

Yes, old man getting clumsy.

Thanks

Dear Ms Lai,
Sorry, am now "Golden (>50) sky happiness". Thanks for remembering. As for falling.....one only falls in love once especially within a month. If you start training now, you may be able to join me next year?
